Bipartisan Majority Passes GENDA in NY Assembly
And now for something a little different, for those who are ODing on nuptials-related news…
Yesterday, the New York State Assembly voted 103-22 to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), thereby amending the state’s human rights law to include anti-discrimination protections based on gender identity and expression. Amazingly, this is the first time that GENDA has ever made it to the floor of the Assembly for a vote, and its passage bodes well for things to come in the Empire State. 13 brave Republicans voted in favor, giving GENDA clear bipartisan support. New Yorkers (and those who *heart* NY), be sure to thank:
Rep. Thomas Alfano
Rep. Philip Boyle
Rep. James Conte
Rep. Clifford Crouch
Rep. Janet Duprey
Rep. Roy McDonald
Rep. David McDonough
Rep. Thomas McKevitt
Rep. Joel Miller
Rep. Teresa Sayward
Rep. Dede Scozzafava
Rep. Fred Thiele
Rep. Robert Walker
While the chances of GENDA seeing a floor vote in the Senate this year are slim, now is the time to contact your state senators, particularly those who share territory with assembly members who voted yes, and encourage them to join in supporting the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act. For more information, check out the Empire State Pride Agenda’s website or seek out one of the New York chapters of Log Cabin to get involved!
