The Politics of Personal Destruction at its Worst

The Gay Left bloggers are falling all over themselves trying to get people to pay attention to the fact that there is an openly gay person working for Sen. John McCain.  This is a newsflash?

Here’s the deal.  Wacky Left bloggers are on a witch hunt and this time their target is John McCain’s chief-of-staff, Mark Buse.  Blogger Mike Rogers, whose specialty is “outing” politicians and staffers he deems anti-gay (Republicans, of course), claims that he’s “outing” Buse as a gay man.  Joining in the charade is the Republican-hating and always dramatic Michelangelo Signorile, who posted the hysterical headline: “Hypocrisy Bombshell: Antigay John McCain has a Gay Chief of Staff.”

This headline is laughable.  One, because there is no “bombshell.”  Mark Buse has been openly gay for years and has acknowledged as much.  So the notion that he has been “outed” is simply false.  But secondly–and this is the bigger point–this political stunt by Mike Rogers just proves what Log Cabin has been saying for years.  John McCain is an inclusive Republican who hires the best people, regardless of sexual orientation.

Also, can we please stop childishly lobbing the “homophobic” insult at Republicans who don’t agree with us on every issue?  Rogers and his crowd keep saying McCain is “homophobic” or “anti-gay.”  Words mean things.  Calling John McCain homophobic doesn’t make it so.  The truth is, Sen. John McCain is anything but homophobic.  This is a man who has a record of hiring gay staff members–as evidenced by this recent “bombshell.”

Perhaps with a pivotal election just more than a month away, these “activists” and so-called advocates of gay equality should spend more time…well, actually fighting for gay equality.

I thought these were the same people on the Left who have been preaching for years that sexual orientation should be irrelevant.  But, no, that only applies if you’re a Democrat and agree with them on every gay rights issue.  Otherwise, watch out.  Your personal life is fair game and they’ll abandon their so-called “principles” of diversity and non-discrimination and use your personal life as a weapon against you.

How ugly.

Dan Savage Gets Paid to Lie

Sex columnist Dan Savage, somehow qualified to be a political pundit, appeared on “The Agenda with Joe Solmonese” on XM Satellite Radio to discuss his experience at the Republican National Convention.

It’s a pretty outrageous interview.  Not because Savage is funny.  But more because he is racist and spews mostly lies in the interview.  Listen to the whole thing

After talking about how “nasty” the RNC was, he says, “That’s what is so staggeringly Republican about the whole convention…just how dishonest and what a nasty bit of work it was.”

But then Dan himself proceeds to make dishonest and nasty claims about the RNC and, in particular, Log Cabin Republicans.  Let’s explore those lies.  Here are the most outrageous points Savage makes (in italics), with my response following each.

“We had two days of a convention that were, you know, pardon my French, but they basically boiled down to ‘who does that n-word think he is?’”

Really?  I’d be curious to see what transcripts of the convention you have.  In fact, I’m sure most national news outlets would be interested in getting their hands on those transcripts.  You’re the one who seems to be racist, Dan.

Host: “I want you to talk a little bit about the time you spent with the gay Republicans, the Log Cabin Republicans…”

[Laughter]

Dan Savage then mocks gay Republicans and the hate many of us receive from gays on the Left by saying (sarcasticly), “and how they have suffered…practically Selma, Alabama the way they suffer.”

Is that supposed to be funny?  And he’s calling Republicans racist?

“The Republican Platform is even further to the right…on gay rights…than the one written four years ago under George Bush when the Log Cabin Republicans declined to make an endorsement.”

Simply untrue.  Try actually reading the platform before you talk about it.  This year’s platform makes no mention of civil unions–a big step forward from 2004 when, not only marriage, but civil unions were the target of opposition in the platform.

Then, he dismisses gay Republicans by saying, “There aren’t that many of them.”

“They [Log Cabin Republicans] had a Big Tent Event…there were not that many people at it…fifteen tables and a bunch of empty ones toward the back.  it was very sad.”

Buy a better watch next time you need to “cover” an event, Dan.  (He arrived 15 minutes before the two-hour event ended, which is probably why he found some empty seats.)  Log Cabin had a bigger presence and more people at this convention than any other Republican convention before.

“It’s time for them to fold up their freakin’ big tent and realize that being a social liberal and a fiscal conservative means you’re a Democrat.”

Wow.  For dismissing gay Republicans for being so few in number, you sure do get riled up when you talk about us.

Solmonese:  “So, at that event, which I know is where they announced their endorsement of McCain, did somebody show up, either from the party or the campaign?”

Dan:  “Yeah, they sent Larry Craig.”

[Laughter]

“There were a couple people there from the Republican National Committee, but no.”

Larry Craig?!?!  BRILLIANT!  Nevermind the fact that this guy gets paid for this kind of recycled comedy…but, it’s simply untrue that there was no one there from the campaign.  The campaign’s national political director, Michael DuHaime, showed up to accept the endorsement.  Of course, Dan wouldn’t have known that because, again, he arrived 15 minutes before the event ended.

Also, no mention from Savage that Steve Schmidt, McCain’s Senior Campaign Adviser, spoke to Log Cabin members during the convention as well.

Isn’t it usually when people realize they’re losing that they desperately lie about the other side?  Boy, the Left is sounded desperate, aren’t they?

The GOP Should Kiss Gay-Bashing Goodbye

Today’s Wall Street Journal features an excellent column by James Kirchick, assistant editor of The New Republic.  In his column, titled “The GOP Should Kiss Gay-Bashing Goodbye,” Kirchick makes the case that this year has proven to be a measurable improvement over 2004 for gay and lesbian Americans:

What was noticeably absent from last week’s Republican gabfest? Gay-bashing.

This is not an insignificant development for Republicans. In 2004, gays featured prominently at the Republicans’ convention and in their rhetoric.

Why is that?  One good reason, which all of us at Log Cabin spent most of last week at the RNC talking about, is the shifting attitude among Republicans on this issue:

Republicans might also have noticed the opinions of their own party members and realized that attacking the “gay agenda” would prove unpopular. On the eve of the convention, a New York Times/CBS News poll reported 49% of Republican delegates were in support of either civil unions (43%) or marriage (6%) for gay couples. While 90% of Democratic delegates support either marriage (55%) or civil unions (35%), Republican delegates — the party’s conservative base — are actually more liberal on this issue than Republican voters, only 39% of whom support either option. With 58% of the American public in favor of some form of legal recognition, Republicans are actually closer to the national mood, and are hopefully beginning to understand that Buchananite “cultural war” rhetoric is fast becoming a thing of the past.

The entire column is well worth reading.

So much for that!

Well, I thought I’d be able to blog a little bit in Minneapolis from the Republican National Convention.  But, the realities of having a four-person staff set in.  There was just too much to do and by the time I got back to my room at night, I was exhausted.

I’ll post frequently this week to higlight some of the better articles and commentary about Log Cabin’s endorsement and presence last week at the RNC.  Deb Price’s column is up…about the endorsement and our RNC activities.  You can read Kerry Eleveld’s Advocate article here.
