The ENDA Meltdown

A couple interesting articles on the current battle over the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA): From the Washington Blade and Gay City News.

Log Cabin hasn’t been shouting from the rooftops on this issue, but, as Patrick Sammon points out in the article from the Blade, the Democrats clearly bungled this.  What should have been a behind-closed-doors discussion with gay rights leaders on the reality facing ENDA has erupted into a rather nasty public fight.

Gov. Schwarzenegger Vetoes Marriage Bill

Though not unexpected, Gov. Schwarzenegger’s veto of the marriage bill in California is a disappointment.  From Log Cabin’s news release:

“Log Cabin Republicans express disappointment in Governor Schwarzenegger’s decision to once again veto legislation to provide civil marriage equality,” said Patrick Sammon, President of Log Cabin Republicans.

“Log Cabin Republicans take the Governor at his word that if, and when, the courts of California join the legislature in recognizing the right to civil marriage equality, he will support that decision,” continued Sammon.

Lynne Cheney Again Speaks Out Against Marriage Amendment

In a spirited appearance on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart last night, Lynne Cheney talked about everything from her new book to the war in Iraq to gay marriage.  When she walked on stage, she presented Stewart with a Darth Vader doll, which I thought was very cute.  (A reference to all those nasty labels about the Vice President.)

While she was there to promote her new book, the conversation of course turned to the battle over gay marriage.  Stewart asked whether it’s appropriate for those in the media to ask the Cheney’s about it, given the fact that their daughter, Mary, is gay.  Ms. Cheney handled it beautifully.  She forcefully spoke out against the notion of amending the U.S. Constitution and she talked eloquently about the need to live and let live.  Quoting her mother, she said “People are just people.”

Some (mostly on the Left) will always dismiss the Cheney’s supportive statements about gay and lesbian families because they’re part of an administration that has pushed to ban same-sex marriage.  Unfortunately, I think life is a little more complicated than that.  I’ve always liked the Vice President and his wife.  People can think whatever they want about their policies, but, just as people, I have never been able to see them as anything other than genuinely nice folks…real conservatives who believe and live the phrase “family values” rather than try to throw the concept at people like some vicious political attack.

Romney Ad Update

It was a crazy, but good, week last week as we rolled out Log Cabin’s national television ad highlighting Mitt Romney’s record.  We’ve received great coverage of the ad, including on yesterday morning’s “Meet the Press” with Tim Russert.  You can watch some YouTube videos of the press coverage, including “Meet the Press” here.

The response to the ad by our members and others has been tremendously positive.  There have been a few naysayers who ask why we’re going after a fellow Republican.  Of course, the answer is that we care deeply about the future of our Party and who our Party nominates.  As loyal Republicans, why wouldn’t we engage in the primaries?  That’s what the primary process is all about.  We would rather point out Gov. Romney’s countless flip-flops now than wait and let Hillary Clinton do it in a general election when it’s too late.

Be sure and visit logcabin.org for all the latest reaction and news about the ad campaign.

Ha

“Today is Thursday, Jim.  What’s your position on term limits today?”–Fred Thompson in a 1994 Senate debate against his Democratic opponent, Rep. Jim Cooper.

Maybe Thompson will use a similar line with Mitt Romney tomorrow night in the GOP debate.  Lord knows Romney’s countless flip-flops have given Mr. Thompson plenty of ammunition.

Log Cabin Launches National TV Ad Campaign

Mitt Romney AdIt’s a very exciting day for Log Cabin Republicans.  We’ve just launched a national television ad campaign educating Republican primary voters about Mitt Romney’s real record.  Anyone who has closely followed the GOP race for president knows that former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) has flip-flopped on a whole host of issues.  He has spent millions of dollars trying to re-invent himself to Republicans.

As loyal Republicans who care deeply about the future of our Party and the next presidential election, we felt compelled to weigh in.  Republicans and all Americans deserve a president who is guided by principle, not politics.  You can watch the ad on YouTube via our website, www.logcabin.org  Please help support this critical effort.

christian conservatives and the GOP

It’s going to be an interesting election year if leading Christian conservatives decide to abandon the GOP as recent news stories have indicated.   It seems that, of all the issues the President of the United States has control over, the issues that dominate so much of the far right’s agenda (social issues like gays and abortion) are actually the issues that the President has least control and influence over.

With the current situation in the Middle East, the threat of domestic terrorism and the economy, it’s astonishing to me that Christian conservatives are thinking about bolting the party over abortion and gays.  It just goes to show where their priorities are.

Log Cabin at the GOP Women Convention

James Vaughn and I attended the National Federation of Republican Women 34th Biennial Convention last weekend in Palm Springs, CA.  There were 2,000 Republican women from across the country there to elect officers, hear speakers, attend trainings, and…. shop!  The convention’s vendor area had a ton of vendors selling everything any Republican woman could ever want.   Red, white, and blue sparkles and glitter were on elephant themed clothing, jewelry, and other paraphernalia.  I have never in my life seen so many glue-on diamonds!

Log Cabin was a sponsor of the convention.  We had a information booth in the vendor area.  I can’t tell you how many women came up to us and thanked us for being there.  There was one lady after another telling James and me about their gay son, or sister, or best friend.  It was clear to me that we have a lot of allies in the NFRW.

Here is a photo of some of the convention delegates at our booth with James Vaughn.
