Breaking news from Roll Call:

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested in June at a Minnesota airport by a plainclothes police officer investigating lewd conduct complaints in a men’s public restroom, according to an arrest report obtained by Roll Call Monday afternoon.

This story just broke from Roll Call.  We will have more details and a statement once the facts are known.

Our challenge

In case you missed it, check out this article from Time Magazine.  It highlights the potential trouble the GOP faces going into next year’s elections as presidential candidates court conservative primary voters, but risk turning off mainstream voters that will give them a general election win, and the White House, in 2008.

It’s an important article, but a bit lopsided.  It’s obvious that the GOP isn’t alone in this.  Democrats also spend the primary season catering to a “base” that, though they need for the primary, won’t be enough for the general election.  The article highlights why Republicans need to talk about a hopeful unifying agenda that will unite ALL Americans…from conservatives to moderates and everyone inbetween.  THIS IS OUR CHALLENGE AS REPUBLICANS!  The article practically annoints the Democrats as the one party trying to unite people of all political stripes.  Not so sure about that.

Also notice Time’s labeling of Mitt Romney as a more “moderate” Republican.  This, despite his ardent support for a federal marriage amendment and opposition to relationship recognition for gay and lesbian Americans.  I don’t know how moderate that is…

Log Cabin Opposes Hike in Gas Tax

Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon this week joined other conservative leaders in signing a letter to President Bush and Congress in opposition to a proposed increase in the gas tax.

And folks, the tax hike proposal is a BIG one!  Liberal Congressman James Oberstar (D-MN) wants to increase the gas tax by a whopping 27%!!!

No gay Republicans? Puh-leease.

Chemistry.com, an online dating site that has marketed itself as welcoming to gays and lesbians, has been running a really nasty ad.  The ad says in a snarky way “Gay Republicans Welcome.  (All Three Of You).”  You can view the ad on a lot of gay websites like 365gay.com.

I think everyone at Log Cabin is quite used to the tired old stereotype that there can be no such thing as a gay Republican.  That’s nothing new.  But to make that absurdity the basis for an ad campaign is really a bit thoughtless.  Gay doesn’t always equal Democrat…or Anti-Republican.  I think most people understand that.  Unfortunately, the folks at Chemistry.com don’t.

Rove

Log Cabin President Patrick Sammon talks about the recent announcement that President Bush’s chief strategist Karl Rove will be leaving the administration at the end of the month.  Sammon told the Bay Area Reporter, “I think history will judge Karl Rove’s tenure as a missed opportunity.”  The article is well worth reading.

Today’s Buzz: Rep. Deborah Pryce to Retire

MembersRoll Call is reporting that Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-OH) will announce tomorrow that she won’t seek a ninth term in Congress.  We will certainly be sad to see Rep. Pryce go.  When it comes to inclusive fair-minded Republicans, she led the way.  As the fourth-ranking Republican in Congress, Pryce stood up for true conservative principles and courageously (twice) voted against the anti-gay Federal Marriage Amendment.  A chief co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and a supporter of comprehensive hate crimes legislation, she’s been a longtime Log Cabin ally.  In fact, we recently honored her at our capital celebration just last month.  She’s pictured here at the Log Cabin event with former Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ), Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR) & Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT).

You can read more about the announcement here.
